HoSt and Ringas team up to modernize biogas plants in Northern Italy

A significant modernization effort is underway across Northern Italy, where technology supplier HoSt Bioenergy Systems (part of HoSt Group) is teaming up with project developer Ringas to transform three existing biogas facilities into advanced biomethane production sites. The projects are located in Cremona and Alessandria and involve upgrading and expanding current biogas infrastructure rather than building entirely new plants.

Construction Progress and Technical Capacity

Construction is already progressing, with completion targeted for June 30, 2026. Once finished, the three sites together will house 20 anaerobic digesters, 12 of which are already in place, with 7 new units being added. Combined, the facilities will process 4,000 Nm3/h of biogas, yielding 2,200 Nm3/h of biomethane.

Three Partners, Three Roles

HoSt Bioenergy Systems is responsible for supplying the digester components, along with flare systems and oxygen generators, at all three locations. Ringas, meanwhile, is handling the feedstock handling systems, piping, and other balance-of-plant construction work. Biogas upgrading equipment, the systems that convert raw biogas into pipeline-quality biomethane, are being supplied by Bright Renewables, adding to Italy’s expanding renewable gas production capacity.

Italy's Biomethane Market and the Shift from CHP to Biomethane

Italy has emerged as one of the most active biomethane markets in Europe, propelled by supportive national policy and a broader push toward decarbonizing the energy sector. The three Ringas sites currently generate electricity through combined heat and power (CHP) systems. Still, they are being converted into full biomethane production facilities to secure their long-term efficiency and sustainability.
